Job Description for
Youth & Children’s Worker

Responsible to: Community Pastor

Job Purpose: To deliver a program of Youth and Children’s work that engages children and young people enabling them to grow in Christian faith. To set an example to all children and young people of personal faith in Jesus being worked out on a daily basis.

Church Context: Shoeburyness & Thorpe Bay Baptist Church is a ‘Purpose Driven’ Church. Our mission statement is to reach our community and beyond. Young people and children are an important part of the church and we seek by our lifestyle and teaching to show them Jesus, hoping and praying that they will find faith through Jesus for themselves. We want to see them grow in their faith and to discover their own spiritual gifting in a safe, encouraging environment so that they too may serve God in our community and beyond.

Job Tasks:
• To provide pastoral support for young people and children.
• To play an active and supportive role in the on-going church organisations and activities.
• To lead the youth event on a Sunday evening for teenagers.
• To maintain a partnership with local youth community charity based in Shoeburyness High School.
• To develop links and relationships with local primary schools.

Key Competencies:
• Have a strong personal faith and good devotional life.
• Have a heart for youth and children’s work.
• Be able to work alongside the Youth & Children’s Ministry Co-ordinator and as part of a team with paid staff and volunteers.
• Be able to plan and lead family services and other youth and children’s events as required.
• Be able to listen to young people and children.
• Be supportive of Baptist principles and practice.
• Be able, prior to appointment, to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced CRB check through Shoeburyness and Thorpe Bay Baptist Church.


Knowledge/Experience
• Have theological and/or youth/children’s training.
• Have experience in Christian/Church based youth or children’s work.

Skills/Abilities
• Be well motivated and able to motivate others.
• Be well organised.
• Be able to communicate effectively.
• Be able to build and develop healthy relationships with children/ young people and team members.
• Be adaptable to changing circumstances.

Hours 37 per week - salary circa £16,500
